Your time is valuable and you don’t want to waste it. In this review you are going to see what Literably is all about and if you can make money with it.
But wait… check out my #1 recommendation for making money online.
Name: Literably
Website: Literably.com
Founder: Habib Moody & Tyler Bore
What is Literably?
Literably is an online assessment platform that helps teachers screen and accesses their students reading levels.
The company is headquartered in San Franciso and was founded by Typer Borek and Habib Moody.
It diagnosis skill gaps, reading difficulties and monitors the progress of students k-8 which allows teachers less time testing and more time working with the students.
The company’s apps record a running record of students reading out loud into a device, along with comprehension questions and a short retelling.
How does Literably work?
Liberaly is able to support grade levels and guided reading levels. You can choose which level you want or let Literably choose for you.
The students read out loud to Literably individually or the whole class can be tested at once. Literably supplies you with the following data and recommends a guided reading level.
- An audio recording
- A running record
- Words correct per minute
- Percentage accuracy
- Common Core comprehension score
Teachers are able to print or email the data with students’ parents and other administrators.
How to Make money with Literably?
Literably’s classroom tools help teachers monitor their student’s reading progress. The teachers download Literably’s software onto a computer and the student reads out loud while the software produces an audio recording of it.
When you work with Literbly you are considered a Transcriber/Scorer. Your job is to listen to the audio recordings of the children reading out loud and type what you hear, mistakes included such as:
- Phonetic errors
- Additions
- Ommissions
Lierably gives you access to the text the student read while the app was recording. When you are finished transcribing you score the reading capability of the student and send the results to Literably.
Check out the video below to see what a Literably scorer does.
How much money can you earn as a Transcriber/Scorer?
As with most transcribing jobs, the money you earn really depends on how fast you can transcribe. The more experienced you get the faster you will become.
Litably job posting stated you can earn from $10 to $20 an hour. The pay is based on the number of audio minutes you’ve accurately transcribed. The current rate of pay is $0.30 and $0.80 per minute.
Literably Training
You do not need any experience to join Literably. The company will send you recordings that have already been transcribed. This is used as part of your training to see if you can identify the same mistakes.
Your transcription will be compared to the previous transcription. It does not have to be perfect but you have to get less than 2% word difference and less than 10% phoneme difference.
What are phonemes? Literally has a guide that will show you vowel phonemes and consonant phonemes. The guide also has phonetic transcriptions of common words. Phonemes allow you to type non-words verbatim.
Learn more about phonemes from the video below
You will have to score at least six training recordings with a certain amount of accuracy before you are given real recordings to score. Within five to ten seconds of scoring a training test you will be able to compare the difference to one completed by Literably.
If you accept a contract with Literably, the company with send you a mixture of training recording (tests) and real work to transcribe and score.
You have to do your very best with every recording because if your accuracy goes down so does the number of real recordings you will receive. The company will only send you training recordings until you show improvement.
How to Apply
The application process is pretty simple. You sign up using your name, email address and create a password. You also need to provide your PayPal email address in order to get paid.
Afterward, you must complete 6 test recordings. The recordings must be completed within 30 minutes. The website has a video that shows you how to score. You will listen to the child reading out loud and type what you hear.
The company does not have strict requirements but as of November 15, 2019, Literably will not contract with you as an independent contractor if you live in the following states:
- California
- Connecticut
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- Nebraska
- New Jersey
The company is also open to hiring international contractors.
Is Literably a scam?
Literably is not a scam but it has a bit of a learning curve. If you are interested in helping children improve their reading I suggest you give Literably a try.
I would not use this as my main source of income if you do get contracted with them. I believe in not putting all my eggs in one basket.
Below are a few more companies that pay you to transcribe.
