What is Speechpad?
Speechpad is a transcription company that has been in existence since 2008 and is based in California.
The company has a system that utilizes a mix of human and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to turn audio and video files into text. AI is used for the beginning stage of transcription. The company utilizes freelance transcribers for the human part of the stage.
Speechpad offers several transcription services such as:
Audio-to- text transcription
Speechpad has types of jobs for their freelancers. Such as:
- Transcriber – As a transcriber, you would turn spoken words into text format.
- Captioner – A captioner puts captions on video files. Subtitles.
- Reviewer – A reviewer’s job is to edit and correct other transcribers’ work.
- Translator – You must have the ability to translate spoken words into more than one language.
How to Get Started With Speechpad?
The first thing you need is the ability to type fast and accurately. If you know you got that down pat, then go here to start the application process. If you need work on either your typing speed or the accuracy, go here.
After you apply you will have to take a test and pass a background check. Keep in mind that the test is more for testing your typing speed not for transcribing.
Speechpad is good for people who are just putting their feet in the door of transcribing. They hire newbies and experienced transcribers.
When you join Speechpad, you start as a level one transcriptionist. There are opportunities for advancement and you can move from one level to another as you get more experienced and the pay increases as well.
Speechpad Transcription Job Requirements
The job requirements are pretty simple and straightforward:
You need to have a quiet distraction-free place to work
Foot pedal- optional
You also need:
- to be fluent in English.
- to have a typing speed of at least 40 words per minute.
- to have solid grammar and punctuation skills.
- to understand various accents and dialects.
How much does Speechpad pay?
Like many transcription companies, Speechpad paid pays per audio minute. The company pays its transcriptionists and transcribers from $0.25 to $1 per audio minute. This may sound like a lot of money but let’s be clear on it. You can accept a five-minute audio job, but more than likely it will take a lot more than five minutes to transcribe it.
So let’s say it takes you one hour to transcribe five-minute audio, you will earn $5 for the successful completing of that $5 audio job. You get paid for the length of the job, not the time it takes for you to complete.
Speechpad pays $0.30 to $1 per audio minute for captioning. Reviewers earn anywhere between $0.20 to $1 or more per audio minute.
Payments are made through PayPal only. So you need to have a PayPal account. The company pays twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Yes, Speechpad is a legit company. It is one of the best transcription companies for people with no experience. There are not that many jobs for the inexperienced thou.
You can review snippets of an audio job before you accept it. The support team is there when you need them.
